PIRATES SUFFER TOUGH OVERTIME LOSS TO MSU BEARS, 66-62

BALTIMORE, Md. – Senior guard Rashad West scored a game-high 19 points, but that wasn’t enough as the Hampton University Pirates suffered a 66-62 overtime loss to the Morgan State University Bears here on Monday in front of a crowd of 3,738 at Hill Field House.
With the loss, the Pirates fell to 15-11 overall and to 8-5 in MEAC play, while the Bears moved one step closer to claiming their first MEAC regular-season title with an overall record of 18-9 and a 12-2 mark in conference play.
The Pirates were down by as many as 10 points at one point in the contest before battling back to tie the game up at 50-all at the end of regulation. It was Adrain Woodard who made a jumper with 3:41 reminding in game to pull the Pirates within two points and from that point on the Bears would go up by as many as four points before Matthew Pilgrim would make a dunk to tie it at 50 with 1:15 reminding in the game.
In the overtime period, Hampton jumped out to a three-point lead, but the Bears regained the lead and sealed the victory from the free throw line, where they finished 5-for-6 in the last 17 seconds of the game.
Morgan State opened the game playing stingy defense and held the Pirates to just one field goal over the first 11 minutes. The Bears led 12-3 at the 9:22 mark before Hampton got back in the game and cut the lead to 22-19 following a three-pointer by West with 3:13 remaining in the half.
The Pirates shot just 22.2 percent in the first half, including 4-for-16 from three-point range. The Bears shot 9-for-31 from the floor (29%) and was 2-for-10 in three-pointers.
The Pirates entered the second half with renewed energy, suffocating defense and the play of West. West scored 11 of his game-high 19 points in the second half as the Pirates rallied and outscored Morgan State 29-20 to send the game into an extra period.
The Bears out-rebounded the Pirates by margin of 50-36 and it made the difference in the game.
The Pirates will try to rebound from this tough road loss on Saturday, March 1 as they return home to finish out their final three games at home, beginning with Norfolk State. Game time is slated for 6 p.m., with the women’s g ame starting at 4 p.m.
